BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE

MINUTES

Present:  Tom Moran, Robyn, Brown, Judith Wolfe, Mary Ellen Halliwell, Roberta Clement, Sandra Power, Shirley Walker, Kristen Picone-Barricelli, Marcia Lambert, Ellen Talkowsky and Jason Silva

Tom brought the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m.  

Old Business:  

MBTA – Mary Ellen sent proposal letter to Pat Barrett.  Pat is forwarding letter to MBTA committee, will possibly take 45 days before getting response.  Mary Ellen will send letter in January for next year’s clean sweeps, plantings, etc.

Traffic Island Program – Awards ceremony was very successful with seven (7) awards recipients.  We have 7-8 new island sponsors.  Stromberg’s requested permission to plant in small rowboat on island in front of their restaurant and Bill & Bob’s on Bridge Street.  Clause should be added to contract stating approval needed for anything out of ordinary (deviation/ancillary).  Islands near Fantasy Island/Vinnin Square possibly sponsored by Beverly National?

Bench Repair – Roberta inventoried Lafayette Park benches.  Trees at park were pruned, flood lights are being installed.  Meeting with Home Depot for repair of benches.  Possibility of decreasing number of benches in park.

Community Impact Unit/Salem Police Dept – Marc Berube.

Graffiti – Jason informed Committee that C.I. Unit/community service for young adults in City to address Graffitti issue.

Jason informed Committee that new maps in kiosks are scheduled to be complete by October.

New Business:  

Artist’s Row – Shirley informed Committee that RCG will sponsor $1,500 towards clean up of area.  Including tree trimming, lighting, weeding, plantings on Front Street.  Move dumpster at Lobster Shanty.  Pick theme/color.  Signage at public restrooms.  Roberta and Mary Ellen volunteered to help, need members to meet at Artist’s Row to tour area.

Tree decorating as fundraiser for Committee.  Kristen looking into more information.  Holiday trees, to be held at Olde Town Hall, to tie-in with “Holiday Happenings.”  To take place inside, with artificial trees, raffle, admission, contest.  “Treemendous Affair.”  For more info, see:  Methuenfestivaloftrees.com.

Litter Campaign/Flower Beds around Senior Center @ 5 Broad Street.
Meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m.  Next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 25th @ 7:30 p.m.
